For the major part of my working life I have been employed in the public sector as a teacher in both primary and high schools and in TAFE. For the latter part I have been a school counsellor in the NSW Education Department and a counselling psychologist in private practice. In my private work I concentrate on adults who are dealing with the challenges and traumas experienced in life in all its manifestations. I particularly enjoy working with men, with members of the GLTB community and with older adults. I bring to my practice a lifetime of experience in our culture having experienced marriage, parenthood, separation and renewal. I have a strong spiritual belief that I bring to my practice and incorporate these practices into my work with clients.
My basic philosophy is of respect for the integrity of the client. I believe my role as a counsellor is to assist clients to challenge their core beliefs and values that are causing them distress to develop new ways of being in their life. I employ the strategies of narrative therapy, CBT, solution focused and various systemic approaches as appropriate to achieve these goals with clients. In my approach I use the goals of Happiness Psychology and Positive Psychology as these are consistent with my belief that we are able to develop ways of meeting the demands of our life that enable us to lead a happy and emotionally healthy life.
My approach is one of involved conversation. Exploring the issues that a client brings to therapy and challenging these actions and values in order to explore the meanings behind these values and to assist the client to develop new ways of being in the culture and society in which they operate.
