I am foremost a counselling psychologist concerned with the positive development and empowerment of the individual – a client centred approach based on empathy, compassion and emotional respect.
I have many clients who are suffering from depression, anxiety and poor self -esteem and are experiencing life difficulties in dealing with these personal issues. A primary aim is to develop positivity, resilience and personal integrity to assist the individual in overcoming these life difficulties.
My main approach is based in Narrative Therapy, with CBT [Cognitive Behaviour Therapy], Emotionally Focused Therapy, Short Solution Focused Therapy, Systemic Therapy and other related approaches as they appear appropriate. The impact of Positive Psychology and Happiness Psychology on my practice is considerable.
I believe lasting change can only occur when the client and the counsellor have the opportunity to develop and implement change over time. I expect to see clients for a minimum of six sessions and sometimes considerably longer as we work together over time to effect lasting change.
I bring a strong spiritual [as distinct from religious] belief to my practice and utilise the strategies of conscious relaxation, meditation, mindfulness and breathe work in my practice. I find this very supportive of the client's wish to regain, maintain and strengthen control of their life. Issues of diet, lifestyle, health and fitness and relationships are also considered a part of the holistic approach to emotional and mental health that are part of my practice.
I consult to individuals and groups undertaking training in workplace relations, survival skills, peer and workplace management as well as anti –bullying in the workplace.
I am available to teach meditation, relaxation and stress management skills to individuals and groups in the workplace and in schools. I have a program of meditation and stress management for senior students that can be incorporated in a Life Studies skills set in senior classes.
Intern supervision to Registration as a Psychologist is available.
Lifestyle coaching is part of the process of adapting to change as we move though life. I see assisting individuals develop strategies to deal with and adapt to and incorporate change as part of the counselling process.
Transition to retirement coaching is available to those individuals as they move from full time employment – and what that has meant to them for many years – into full or semi retirement, and what that means to them as they face up to changes in life expectations, health and self esteem.
